This week’s House of the Dragon episode doesn’t have much action, but the newest part of Ryan Condal’s big show makes up for the missing bloody fights and sad action scenes with a bunch of important changes in Westeros. Season 2, Episode 5, “Regent,” shows Daemon (Matt Smith) getting somewhere in the Riverlands, and Rhaenyra’s (Emma D’Arcy) Blacks start looking for new dragonriders after a smart idea from House of the Dragon’s Prince Jacaerys (Harry Collett). Even though Team Rhaenyra is getting stronger, the biggest surprise happens in King’s Landing where the Greens can’t find a regent for King Aegon. This leads to the worst loss yet for the Dowager Queen Alicent (Olivia Cooke).
The Greens need to find someone to take Aegon’s (Tom Glynn-Carney) place after last week’s awful fight at Rook’s Rest where House of the Dragon showed us how scary dragon battles can be. Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) burned Aegon badly with Vhagar’s fire while they were flying hurting him and Rhaenys (Eve Best). House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 5 shows Aegon come back to the Red Keep almost dead too hurt to rule while he’s stuck in bed. So, the Greens’ small council decides they need someone else to rule for now. Alicent says she should do it, but the king’s advisors don’t agree. They pick Prince Aemond instead, treating her just like how her family got power in the first place.
‘House of the Dragon’ Episode 5 Sticks a Funny Pin in Alicent’s Royal Dreams
Alicent knows how to run Westeros. She says so herself in House of the Dragon’s new episode. Back in Season 1, she was in charge when her husband, King Viserys (**Paddy Considine) ** got too sick to even stand up, let alone sit on the Iron Throne . Daemon got mad when Alicent took down Targaryen flags during her time as regent in Season 1, Episode 8, “The Lord of the Tides.” But the kingdom stayed peaceful while Alicent was in control showing she could lead well even if she looked out for herself. So it’s weird that she’s turned down in House of the Dragon’s latest episode when you think about how good she is at leading. It’s not fair just like when Alicent stole Rhaenyra’s throne in Season 1.
Just like Rhaenyra’s advisors keep saying men are better at war, Alicent gets talked down to by the even more woman-hating Green court. Tyland Lannister (Jefferson Hall) thinks putting Alicent in charge would make the Greens look weak, while Ser Jasper Wylde (Paul Kennedy) says war makes Alicent’s past work not matter. Even though Alicent has an idea and Grand Maester Orwyle (Kurt Egyiawan) backs her up, they don’t let her lead ’cause she’s a woman and pick Prince Aemond instead. After letting her dad, Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) replace Rhaenyra with a guy heir in Season 1, Alicent now knows how Rhaenyra felt when she couldn’t do anything when the people she trusted most let her down.
