“Kalki 2898 AD” (pronounced [kə.l.kɪ]) is a 2024 Indian Telugu-language science fiction film directed by Nag Ashwin and produced by C. Aswani Dutt under Vyjayanthi Movies. The film features a star-studded cast, including Amitabh Bachchan, Prabhas, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone, and Disha Patani. This movie marks the first installment of the planned Kalki Cinematic Universe, drawing inspiration from Hindu scriptures. Set in a post-apocalyptic future in the year 2898 AD, the plot revolves around a select group of individuals on a mission to save the unborn child, Kalki, from SUM-80, a laboratory subject.
The film was initially announced in February 2020 under the working title “Prabhas 21,” as it is the actor’s 21st lead role. The title was later changed to “Project K” with the confirmation of the main cast. Principal photography began in July 2021, delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming took place intermittently over the following three years, concluding in mid-March 2024. The official title, “Kalki 2898 AD,” was revealed in July 2023. The film’s music is composed by Santhosh Narayanan, with cinematography by Djordje Stojiljkovic and editing by Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao. With a production budget of ₹600 crore (US$72 million), it stands as one of the most expensive Indian films ever made.
